Global Day of Action for Climate Justice

On November 6th, GCCLP will join the global call climate action in Glasgow, Scotland, and worldwide for the Global Day of Action for Climate Justice.
On this Global Day of Action, we call on the United States to acknowledge and atone for its role in the global climate crisis that threatens our future by addressing the loss and damage to the Global South and the Gulf South. In particular, we call for climate reparations to the Black diaspora and Indigenous communities already dealing with climate impacts on their land, their life, and their culture due to the climate crisis fueled by the U.S. and Global North’s extractive systems and economic practices.

COP26 Black/African Climate Leaders Social

The Gulf Coast Center for Law and Policy (GCCLP) is hosting simultaneous celebrations of cultural appreciation! Black/African climate leaders from around the globe are invited to an evening of networking and connecting across the Black Diaspora in honor of COP26. This event is an opportunity to relax, celebrate and enjoy the beauty and richness of our connected communities. Laugh, dance, drink, and learn more about each other as a global family in an amazing atmosphere.

This event will occur simultaneously in the U.S. and Scotland. Join us on either side of the globe for an evening of appreciation and excellent company.

Black August: An Introduction to Just Transition Lawyering
Thursdays in August, online
In partnership with the Red, Black & Green New Deal initiative at the Movement for Black Lives, the NAACP Environmental & Climate Justice Program and University of California @ Irvine School of Law, the GCCLP invites practicing Black, Indigenous and attorneys of Color, legal educators, law students and justice allies in the legal field to a webinar series in August created to provide an introduction to Just Transition Lawyering.

Responding to the impact of the global climate crisis on natural resources, frontline communities, human rights, and democracy, Just Transition Lawyering provides strategic and allied support to the leaders and communities anchoring and building the environmental & climate justice movement. Just Transition Lawyering works to end discriminatory and destructive practices and policies while imagining new, justice-oriented alternatives using the law and legal system. The Just Transition Lawyering webinar series explains basic concepts of climate change, racial justice, economic justice, and Just Transition Lawyering through the lens of lawyers on the frontlines.

Towards a Red, Black, and Green New Deal

As a part of From the Ground Up: Global Gathering for Climate Justice, the Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy hosted "Towards a Red, Black, and Green New Deal," a movement strategy conversation between international Black leaders on the connections between the struggle for Black liberation and for Global Climate Justice. Speakers discussed the need for climate reparations for communities in Africa and the African diaspora, lifting up the Movement for Black Lives' reparations toolkit and work to develop a 'Red, Black, and Green New Deal' platform that centers Black lives and Black visions for Climate Justice. How can we build transnational Black solidarity towards a global Red, Black, and Green New Deal that delivers reparations?

"From the Ground Up" was an online convergence organized by the COP26 Coalition to mark the moment that the COP26 climate conference was set to take place in Glasgow. The gathering provided space to educate, strategize and coordinate, to build power and connect within global justice movements.

A four-part political education series every fourth Tuesday of the month from June through September. This education series is unique in that we chose topics where there is tension among leaders within the climate justice movement. We will hear from the experts, learn the pros and cons for these topics, and decide for ourselves where we stand. Topics include carbon pricing, biomass, community & utility solar, and climate financing.
Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions to our expert panelists. These sessions are open to all; so please share with your networks. They will also be recorded and available for use for your own education and organizing purposes.

Gulf Gathering 2020

The Gulf Gathering brought together 120+ leaders from all five Gulf South states to advance and build regional power through strategy development rooted in the on-going work of environmental justice and climate justice leaders in our region. Together we created multiple spaces to advance healing and reconciliation for Gulf South communities, established 5 stateweide policy tables (one for each Gulf South state) to lead local policy and regulatory work in 2021, established a regional action plan that builds around land, and affirmed a 12 month regional communications strategy. Collectively this yields the Gulf South for a Green New Deal 2021 Action Plan, which will steer our shared work throughout 2021.

Katrina15 to Rita15: Community Rising Series

After Hurricane Laura hit Louisiana and Texas, we shifted our Gulf South for a Green New Deal #Katrina15 Commemoration. The moment called upon us to stand in solidarity with our Gulf South family recovering in real time, while honoring 15 years of ongoing recovery from Katrina.

Community programming postponed due to Laura will now be featured in 10 Gulf South for a Green New Deal #Katrina15toRita15 Power Hour sessions at 12:00 pm (Noon) CDT from September 14th through September 25th, marking the 15 years since Hurricane Rita. These sessions are part of the Community Rising series and will feature regional leaders and advocates advancing frontline solutions to the climate crisis along with local art & culture. Come ready to connect, learn and get energized each day - to renew our spirits and build our power for the fight for climate and racial justice. The seas are rising and so are we!

From Ashé Cultural Arts Center: "The cast of this year’s production features Adella Gautier, Karen Kaia Livers, Mae Chapman, Karel Sloane-Boekbinder, Anne-Liese Juge Fox, and Sunni Patterson, with a special appearance from our CEO, Asali DeVan Ecclesiastes. Created by Vagina Monologues playwright V (formerly Eve Ensler) in partnership with V-Day and the Ashé Cultural Arts Center, Swimming Upstream is penned by 16 women from New Orleans and the Gulf region, who recount their stories of survival post-Katrina in word and song.
"The reading will be livestreamed, followed by a talk back with the cast and co-creators, featuring Asali DeVan-Ecclesiastes, V (formerly Eve Ensler), Carol Bebelle, Anne-Liese Juge Fox, and Karel Sloane Boekbinder from 3:45pm-4:15pm. We will also hear updates from the frontlines of Hurricane Laura, from grassroots organizer KD Minor and from Pastor Gary Dardar, pastor of the River of Life Fellowship in Lake Charles and enrolled member of the United Houma Nation.

The session will open with a welcome from August Creppel, Principal Chief of the United Houma Nation and the keynote address offered by Malik Rahim. Community art, music, poetry and learning panels are designed to remind participants about what really happened in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and offer an update on the work from the frontlines. Resistance & Movement

Join us for an all level dance workshop led by Vanessa Sanchez and La Mezcla. La Mezcla is a multi-disciplinary rhythmic ensemble rooted in Chicanx, Latinx, and Indigenous traditions and Social Justice.
The workshop will explore movement and percussion as tools of resistance against systemic oppression, and uplift the legacy of Mexican feminist resistance and Black/Brown alliance, through dance.
Starting out with a lesson in Samba Reggae from Brazil and closing with a short percussive pattern, we'll take a look at how dances rooted in the African diaspora and Indigenous traditions have created worldwide social change throughout history.

CARRIZO COMECRUDO TRIBUNAL for HUMAN RIGHTS
Friday, May 22 - Saturday, May 23, 2020
The Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy is joining with the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas - the Esto'k Gna people - to hold this Indigenous-led people's Tribunal to support the Tribe's continuing resistance against the petrochemical build-out and border wall expansion threatening their sacred sites in Garcia Pasture, within the Rio Grande Valley. The Tribunal will investigate rights violations by state and corporate actors against the Esto'k Gna and against the land, following a decolonized process that centers Indigenous voices and an Indigenous framework towards addressing harm and pursuing justice.
Connecting the dots between extractive infrastructure, the border, violence against Indigenous women and girls, ecology, and cultural erasure; this event will advance calls for Indigenous sovereignty, climate justice, and a Just Transition from this polluting economy. This Tribunal is part of the work of healing & reconciliation that is essential to Gulf South for a Green New Deal. Only when we acknowledge and repair past and present harms can we move towards ecological equity and collective liberation.

ROAD TO THE GREEN NEW DEAL - NATIONAL TOUR:
Flagship Stop in New Orleans
The Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy is excited to be hosting the New Orleans stop of the Sunrise Movement's national Road to the Green New Deal Tour, in partnership with a growing list of local organizations. The tour spans the entire U.S., with 8 massive tour stops and over 100 town hall meetings, where communities have been gathering together to share stories of climate disaster and resistance, to build movement, and to vision what a Green New Deal should deliver for their regions.

Our goals for the New Orleans tour stop are to 1) Honor local Indigenous and Black leadership around caring for each other and the earth; 2) Create a safe, inclusive space to connect the dots around climate, climate disaster, jobs, and next generation leadership; and 3) Launch Gulf South for a Green New Deal as a multi-state effort to implement the vision of the Green New Deal, rooted in the unique realities of the Gulf South. The Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy invites you to join us for our first People's Movement Assembly of the year. In 2019, GCCLP will be meeting with communities throughout Louisiana to discuss the issues and solutions connected to Louisiana's coastal crisis and climate change. What better place to start than the Northshore!

Participants from St. Tammany, St. Bernard, Tangipahoa, Washington, St. Helena and Livingston parishes will leave this dynamic session with a deeper understanding of how to protect our greatest assets and engage in Louisiana's Restoration Economy. Presentations will be offered by local leaders and information offered by the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA); the Alliance for Affordable Energy, Sierra Club and Deep South Center for Environmental Justice.

#Katrina13: Honoring Women & the Sacred Feminine in
Climate Disaster Recovery
The Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy and Lift Louisiana invite you to join us in commemorating 13 years of recovery from Hurricane Katrina. #Katrina13 will host a conversation with New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell and feature a panel discussions with community leaders from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Puerto Rico. Speakers will explore the role of women and the feminine in climate disaster and recovery, and will uplift local leadership from climate frontlines across the gulf. #Katrina13 will also welcome the Freedom to Breathe Tour, a cross-country bus tour that spotlights injustice and elevates the stories of people advancing solutions. The Freedom to Breathe Tour invokes the Freedom Riders of the 1960’s in a call-to-action for people throughout the country to confront the racial, social, economic, and climate injustices that America faces today.
